The Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon

The Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon is an annual sporting charity fundraising event. The Marathon raises funds for Seeing is Believing, a Standard Chartered Bank initiative for eradicating avoidable blindness in children under the age of nine.

RACE CATEGORIES

The Marathon has been held since 2003 and usually takes place during the month of October. The 2010 event was the 8th edition of the Marathon and was held on Sunday 31st October at the Nyayo National Stadium. The event caters for everyone with a number of categories namely:

  • Tricycles 42 km.
  • Wheelchairs 12.5 km.
  • Full Marathon 42 km.
  • Half Marathon 21 km.
  • 10 km Road Race.
  • Safari Junior Family Fun Run (Approximately 3.5 km)

ELITE AND FOREIGN RUNNERS

The Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon has truly come of age attracting both local and foreign elite runners. As Kenya is home to a number of world renowned athletes, the event does its part for the country’s sports tourism by attracting many locals and foreigners eager to catch a glimpse of the athletes.

The thirst of participants is quenched by water stations located approximately every 5 km and at the finish. Registration normally closes about two weeks before the Marathon and non-resident rates (as per the 2010 Marathon) are as follows:

  • Road races US $ 50 per participant.
  • Family Fun Run US $ 25 per participant.

Kindly note, the above rates are subject to change for future events and that participants of the 21 km and 42 km categories must be over 18 years of age.
